(oth. ed. שמתרין, שמתרן) (in the Sabbatical year) one must not smear resin over a root (of a bulbous plant), because it makes it softer (advances its ripening). 2) to rot, decay; to become weak. B. Bath.19b בשהִתְרִיפוּ when the dates are rotten. Y.B. Kam.V, end, 5a בשהתריפו מחמת אוירו when the animals grew sick from the air in the pit (v. הֶבֶל).
